From 21-23 March 2016, Hedayah and the Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation (JCLEC) convened an expert workshop on “South East Asia Collection of Counter-Narratives for Countering Violent Extremism” in Semarang, Indonesia.

The workshop invited twenty practitioners, academics and government experts from the South East Asia region, to include Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Participants at the meeting shared examples of counter-narratives from their countries, which included a diverse array of online narratives, social media campaigns, websites, books, magazines, religious narratives, peace rallies, films, video clips and photos. The workshop aimed to collect these counter-narratives as well as discuss the reasons why these counter-narratives were effective in their local contexts. Participants also identified good practices, lessons learned and key gaps for the region in terms of counter-narratives.
The workshop was part of a broader project to develop a Compendium of counter-narratives for the South East Asia region, which was one of the recommended outcomes of the regional Sydney CVE Summit held in June 2015, a follow-up to the White House CVE Summit in February 2015. The Compendium and workshop is supported by the Australian Government’s Attorney General’s Department.
Once completed, the Compendium will be made available on Hedayah’s website. The counter-narratives collected at the Workshop will be made accessible through Hedayah’s Counter-Narrative Collection, which will be launched in the coming months.
