Supporting Victims of Terrorism Workshop (UAE)

From 17-19 December 2013, Hedayah and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organized a workshop with participants of criminal justice and law enforcement participants from Pakistan, India and Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.

International experts, representatives from UN Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force, victims’ associations and relevant international and regional organizations were invited to share experience and best practices. This workshop consisted of a follow up activity to the first meeting on “Supporting Victims of Terrorism” that Hedayah held with UNODC in December 2012 as well as the Regional Workshop on the “Legal aspects related to prevention of terrorism” held in May 2013.
The workshop consisted of a series of presentations, panel discussions, interactive debate with participants aimed at strengthening the efforts of the governments of Pakistan, India and Afghanistan to support victims of acts terrorism. Speakers presented international standards related to the support and protection of victims of terrorism along with relevant regional and global initiatives.
The discussion also aimed at strengthening and integrating national legal and institutional measures as well as skills and knowledge of the policymakers and criminal justice officials to ensure to ensure recognition of the status of the victims of terrorism within the criminal justice system, access to justice for victims of terrorism, protection during the criminal proceedings, as well as reparation for victims.
