Radical Right Counter Narratives – What Works?

While counter narratives are a popular approach to counter the influence of radical right extremist narratives, the challenge has been the limited research on their efficacy. This project remedies this deficiency with a groundbreaking study.

Responding to the growth of radical right extremist narratives, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hedayah led a project to test and analyze the efficacy of radical right counter-narratives in Australia and the US.

While counter-narratives are a popular approach to counter the influence of radical right extremist narratives, the challenge has been the limited research on their evaluation and efficacy. Hedayah’s project aims to remedy this deficiency with its groundbreaking study.

This project is important as it sheds light on the types of counter-narratives that are more likely to be effective or ineffective. The project will in part, be an evaluation of what works, what works better, and what does not work at all. This should advise future counter-narrative campaigns, researchers, policymakers, CVE practitioners, and other experts in the field. The solution, therefore, involves testing various counter-narratives to confirm whether they are likely to impact individuals that may be subscribing to radical right extremist groups or their narratives.

The project provides an evidence base for researchers, policymakers, CVE practitioners, and other experts in the field to run counter-narrative campaigns successfully. This project was in collaboration with Dr Jocelyn Belanger (Hedayah Fellow, NYU Abu Dhabi) and Academic Consulting Services (ACS).
