From 3-4 November, Hedayah organized and hosted an “Expert Workshop on Research Trends in Countering Violent Extremism”.

The purpose of this 2-day expert roundtable that was held in Abu Dhabi was to bring together researchers, policymakers and practitioners in a closed discussion of the current trends in CVE research.
The meeting began with three 1.5 hour thematic discussion sessions and three 1 hour regionally-focused discussion sessions, with each session kicked-off with a 3-5 minute presentations from one expert. The meeting participants then convened in breakout sessions to discuss pre-prepared project proposals, as well as develop new ones. The breakout groups then shared their proposals and recommendations with how to move forward in terms of CVE research for the coming years.
The discussions at the meeting addressed the current research outcomes in countering violent extremism, determined the critical gaps in research on CVE and identified the new and emerging threats of violent extremism.
Hedayah worked with Curtin University to map the existing CVE literature and assess the CVE research landscape before the meeting and this report served as a reference document for attendees to use it a baseline for the discussions.
During the meeting all the discussions, information sharing and comments were conducted under Chatham House Rule, which means participants were free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.
The outcomes of and concrete research proposals during the meeting will be very helpful for Hedayah to establish a recommended research agenda and Action Plan for CVE and Hedayah in the coming 2 years and will be presented in the “Countering Violent Extremism Research Conference 2014” which will be held on 7-8 December 2014 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
